How should buyers specify seams and stitches for heavyweight T-shirts?

A heavyweight T-shirt seam specification should identify the seam and stitch construction for every garment area, plus thread, reinforcement, seam allowance, visible appearance and inspection requirements. Buyers should approve these details on the intended 220–300 GSM cotton garment after finishing because a general instruction such as high-quality stitching cannot control bulk production.

Map construction by garment area

Begin with a front-and-back technical sketch and assign a construction requirement to the shoulder, armhole, sleeve, side seam, hem and neckline. The same T-shirt can use different seam and stitch combinations in different areas, so one general sewing note is not enough.

State whether the body is tubular or side seamed, because this changes construction and fit control. Identify any shoulder-to-shoulder tape, neck seam covering, twin-needle topstitching or other reinforcement that is genuinely required by the approved design.

Connect every instruction to the style number and specification revision. Photographs can show visual direction, but they should not replace a written construction callout and an approved physical sample.

Name stitch and seam requirements clearly

Record the required stitch or seam type using terminology understood by the buyer and factory. Where a standard classification is used, confirm the exact designation with the technical team rather than guessing from appearance.

Specify seam allowance where it affects durability, appearance or finished measurements. State whether seam allowances must lie in a defined direction and whether visible topstitching should be single, twin or another approved arrangement.

Thread type, ticket size, color and stretch behavior should suit the fabric and sewing operation. A heavy body fabric does not automatically require the heaviest available thread; the combination must be sampled and assessed on the actual garment.

Define stitch density and appearance

Stitch density should be written as an agreed range using a stated unit, such as stitches per inch or stitches per centimeter. Do not mix units between the tech pack, sample comments and inspection sheet.

The correct range depends on fabric structure, thread, needle, machine setting and seam purpose. More stitches are not automatically better: excessive needle penetration can damage some knitted fabrics, while insufficient control can reduce seam security.

Define visible workmanship expectations, including balanced stitching, secure starts and ends, no skipped stitches, no loose or broken thread, no unintended puckering and no exposed seam allowance. Identify which observations are critical to the buyer's product.

Evaluate the complete fabric-and-seam combination

Review construction on the intended 100% cotton body fabric at the buyer-selected target within 220–300 GSM. Sewing behavior can change with fabric density, stretch, wash route and finishing, so an isolated test on a substitute fabric may not represent the order.

Measure the garment before and after the agreed production finishing. Check whether seams twist, pucker, rope or distort and whether hem and sleeve openings remain balanced. Keep these observations separate from the general size-tolerance decision.

If seam strength, slippage or another laboratory property is required, the buyer or nominated laboratory should define the applicable method, specimen preparation and acceptance limit. A method name without the selected procedure is incomplete.

Approve a production-representative sample

Use a sample made with the intended material, thread, construction, decoration and finishing route. Record the sample identity and attach clear comments to the exact garment area rather than sending an untracked list of general corrections.

Inspect inside and outside views under consistent conditions. Check shoulder junctions, underarm intersections, side seams, sleeve hems, bottom hem and neckline attachment. Compare both appearance and the written construction requirement.

Where laundering evaluation is required, apply the agreed care procedure and review the same seam areas again. A garment that looks acceptable before laundering can develop twisting, puckering or thread problems afterward.

Carry the approved construction into bulk

Bulk release should reference the approved sample, tech-pack revision and construction sheet. Make the controlling documents available to production and quality teams before sewing begins.

During inline checks, compare actual construction, stitch density and workmanship with the approved reference. Record findings by operation and production lot so corrections can be made before the full order reaches final inspection.

If fabric, thread, machine setup or construction changes materially, review whether a new sample is required. The objective is traceability: every bulk garment should follow the construction the buyer actually approved.
