Why ringer tees need extra color control

A ringer tee joins a light body with a dark rib, or the other way around. If either color bleeds in wash, the clean contrast turns into a stained line. That makes colorfastness the first thing to discuss with a ringer tee manufacturer, before fit or print.

Body and rib specification

• Body: 100% cotton jersey, 220–240 GSM for a classic ringer feel and 260–280 GSM for a heavyweight version.
• Rib: 1x1 cotton rib in the contrast color, with a stated finished width at neck and sleeve.
• Neck rib width: narrow bands look retro; wider bands look modern.
• Sleeve bands: same rib as the neck so both recover alike.

Colorfastness checks before bulk

1. Lab dip both colors against the approved standard.
2. Request a wash colorfastness result for the rib and body.
3. Wash a sewn sample with the actual recipe and inspect the seam line.
4. Review for staining under daylight and store lighting.

A dyed-then-sewn ringer is safer than a garment-dyed ringer, because garment dye colors both the body and the rib at once and removes the contrast. If you want a washed vintage look, ask for an enzyme or softener wash that keeps colors stable.

Construction details

Ringers are usually set-in sleeve, regular fit tees. Specify neck opening relaxed and stretched, rib attachment seam (overlock and coverstitch or binding), and sleeve band finished width. Check that neck and sleeve bands are the same shade, because ribs cut from different lots can vary.

Decoration

Ringer tees often carry a simple chest print or a vintage-style graphic. Water-based and discharge prints suit the retro look on light bodies. On a dark body with a light rib, discharge can be tested, but verify that the rib does not come in contact with discharge paste.

Common ringer tee mistakes

• Approving rib color on a lab dip only, then finding the sewn rib reads darker on the garment.
• Using a different rib supplier for the sleeve bands than for the neck.
• Skipping the wash test because the garment is not garment dyed; even a softener wash can move a weak dye.
• Packing damp garments, which can transfer color between folded layers in transit.
